Evaluation of the Pilot Project for development and manufacturing of Rope Pumps in Mozambique

The Water and Sanitation Working Group (GAS), as part of its assistance for research and development of alternative technology options for rural water supply, is supporting the National Water Directorate on the implementation of different pilot projects for testing the development and production of the rope pump in Mozambique. Skat was part of the Technical team in charge of the evaluation of the pilot project for development of rope pumps.

The Ministério das Obras Pùblicas e Habitação approved in 2005 the implementation of the “Projecto Piloto de Introduçao da Bomba de Corda em Moçambique”. Under the leadership from DNA/DAR and with support from SDC, CARE, UNICEF, WaterAid, (GAS members) three provinces namely Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Zambézia were selected to be involved in the production and testing of the rope pump through the local private sector. For ensuring effective project technical support, monitoring and evaluation of the performance of the pumps and the manufacturers, the GAS group through its Rope Pump sub-group had established a Technical Team comprising of representatives of CFPAS, LEM and SKAT. The main task of the Technical Team is to enable a sustainable development of a Quality Rope Pump for Mozambique by:

  • Evaluating the experiences made in the different pilot projects, taking into account: a) the different environment, b) hydro geological characteristics and c) numbers of users
  • Assisting in the dissemination of various technologies of the Rope Pump
  • Establishing a system to check the quality of the pumps produced, in order to assure a minimum quality standard.

The specific objectives of the evaluation were to provide clear and documented information resulting from the Rope Pump pilot project that will assist the country WASH sector for an informative decision on adoption or not of the Rope Pump as a national standard pump for up streaming groundwater from the shallow aquifer.

The methodology applied under this consultancy included desk review, field visits to and discussions with rope pump manufactures, implementing partners, WASH Government authorities at provincial and national levels, communities / users of the Rope Pumps from the project area.
