The Implementation of a Basic Training for Mason while constructing the Vertical Shaft Brick Kiln

The trainees

Previous experience made on kiln construction proved that the practical construction skill is yet insufficient to achieve good and timely results. The masons are not quality-conscious and very few have the sufficient knowledge of modern construction requirments such as:

  • Making of stone soling
  • The correct mixing and pouring of concrete or mortar,
  • The masonry work with cement or clay mortar in correct measurements horizontally, vertically, the correct bindings and sizes of joints.
  • The skilled and stable preparation of formwork in wood which does not deform when pouring the concrete
  • Reinforcement
  • The compacting of concrete with tamper or by vibration

Taking into consideration such knowledge needs, an on-the-job training course was successfully conducted for four months at the site of the fifth VSBK constructed in Afghanistan. 12 young men participated in the training and  were supported by the five partner entrepreneurs and the Agha Khan Foundation.
