Energy and Climate

Skat offers a wide range of services related to renewable energies, energy efficiency and other climate relevant topics with special focus on hydropower, hybrid systems, eco-efficient technologies (e.g. improved brick kilns) and process optimisation.

Feasibility Study for six Mini-Hydropower Projects in Tanzania
Implementation: 2013-2014

Skat provided support to six mini hydropower project developers by building their capacity to access financing by assisting them with completing comprehensive feasibility studies; the combined capacity of the six plants is about 7-8 MW, whereby the plants are expected to improve rural electrification. Skat’s staff did site investigations and contributed to project design, cost estimate, risk analysis and feasibility reports.

Mini hydropower development in Liberia under the SREP
Implementation: 2013

The objective of the project was to identify and characterise a number of small hydropower projects in the context of the “Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program (SREP) for low income countries” in Liberia. Being approved as a SREP pilot country Liberia was tentatively allocated a fund of up to USD 50 million to support the implementation of RE investments.

Feasibility Study for the establishment of a Centre for Renewable Energies in DR Congo
Implementation: 2013

The general objective of the PBF is protection of biodiversity, sustainable management of tropical forests and improvement of the living conditions in protected areas and adjacent zones. The Centre is expected to bring together the different relevant stakeholders (networking), coordinate activities, offer training, develop innovative and affordable products/ideas, marketing of Renewables and energy efficient products, attract micro-finance options for entrepreneurs etc. Skat’s staff did the preparatory works and drafted a feasibility study for the establishment of the “Energy Centre”.

Quality check of mini hydro feasibility studies under the project PSP hydro in Rwanda
Implementation: 2013-2014

Skat’s staff provided technical advice to the PSP Hydro Team, gave recommendations on necessary improvements and input to specific questions as required by the team. The PSP Hydro project, carried out in the framework of the Energising Development (EnDev) Rwanda programme, aims to provide access to electricity for approximately 20.000 people and to enable small and medium-sized businesses to install and sustainably operate micro hydropower plants. The PSP Hydro project supports private firms in the process of constructing and operating micro hydropower plants (through consulting, training as well as limited co-financing).

Scoping of Opportunities for Integrating Micro-Hydro Turbines into existing Irrigation Weirs in the Lower Mekong Basin
Implementation: 2012-2013

In close cooperation with the Mekong River Commission and its Initiative on Sustainable Hydropower ISH, possibilities to upgrade irrigation structures for multipurpose use (add hydropower and where possible fish passage structures) were assessed, pilot sites were proposed and recommendations were given on how to improve accuracy of estimates for potential sites.

Technical Support in Micro Hydropower Planning, construction, operation and maintenance
Implementation: 2013

More than ten years ago, ADEID (Action pour un Development Equitable, Intégré et Durable) initiated a renewable energy program through which – in the course of time - 12 micro hydropower plants (MHP) have been constructed. Skat’s staff now supported ADEID to finalise the ongoing construction works of MHPs.

Hydropower from non-river based sources in Lebanon
Implementation: 2012

The objective of the project was to identify and assess hydropower potentials in existing infrastructure for the development of multipurpose schemes. Infrastructure with possible hydropower potential included thermal power plants, drinking water systems, irrigation systems and wastewater systems.

Implementation: 2012

Skat’s staff checked the plausibility of available hydrological studies and did a general hydrological and geological assessment for the planned privately financed 10 MW hydropower system of Prell, Albania.

Reuse of Treated Wastewater for Irrigation Purposes in the Northern Jordan Valley
Implementation: 2011-2012

The effluence of two rehabilitated Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP) and a newly constructed WWTP in the region of Central Irbid shall be used for the irrigation of agricultural land in the Jordan Valley. Skat’s staff analysed the possible exploitation of the hydropower potential of the treated wastewater and designed, developed and tendered a Small Hydropower Plant.

Support of SONEDE in exploiting the hydropower potential in the drinking water supply system, Tunisia
Implementation: 2012

Skat’s staff studied and evaluated the available potential of hydropower in the drinking water supply system of the national drinking water utility SONEDE / Tunisia. Assistance was provided to the staff of SONEDE for the implementation of a demonstration project. In addition, a three day classroom and practical training was implemented on technical and economical issues.

Small-scale Hydropower development in ECOWAS countries
Implementation: 2012

Skat staff provided Technical Assistance for the complete preparation and implementation of a five-day regional workshop on «small-scale hydropower (SHP) development in the ECOWAS countries» in cooperation with ECREEE (ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency) and reviewed the up-scale Programme for SHP in the ECOWAS countries.

The Government of the Netherlands is supporting Green PNPM’s block grant component by contributing approximately $8,000,000 to the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) to establish a Technical Support Unit (TSU) which - building upon the PNPM principles - provides technical assistance to communities that are planning and implementing Mini Hydropower schemes (MHP).

The “Access to Modern Energy Services - Ethiopia (AMES-E) Project” was working towards increasing electricity access

The objective of the project has been the provision of sustainable access to modern energy services (hydro and photovoltaics) for around 300,000 beneficiaries. Building on its longstanding experience in the energy sector, GIZ provided technical assistance to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, NGO’s and the private sector.
