RWSN - Rural Water Supply NetworkThe Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) is a global knowledge network for promoting sound practices in rural water supply. RWSN grew out of the need to focus greater attention on rural water supply challenges and to encourage the sharing of experience and knowledge of what works between the many public, NGO and private agencies involved in rural water development.
From handpumps to water supply Originally conceived as the Handpump Technology Network (HTN), RWSN recently broadened its mission from handpumps to focus on rural water supply, and specifically improvements in the application of ground water technologies. RWSN’s objective is create a vibrant knowledge exchange network of the most active rural water actors to strengthen the sustainability, efficiency and effectiveness of rural water supply services. Three New Focus Flagships Worldwide 80% of those who have no access to safe water live in rural areas. Reaching the Millennium Development Goal on water implies significant improvements in access to sustainable rural water supply services. RWSN also maintains its interest in supporting best practice in handpumps and their implementation in rural water supply programs. Creating impetus in Africa While RWSN remains a global network, special attention is focused on Africa where improved access to rural water supply is a crucial factor in combating rural poverty. The aim is to strengthen the region’s capacity to facilitate knowledge exchange, and enable identification of best practices and experiences on rural water supply in flagship areas that can be shared across the continent. |
