These guidelines are for managers, engineers and administrators who are responsible for municipal solid waste mangement and who are looking for ways to improve the service or economise. It covers the "why?" and "how?" of involving new entrepreneurs and small community-based groups in the collection of solid wastes (garbage) from streets, homes and businesses. The book is primarily concerned with situations found in middle- and lower-income countries, and draws extensively on experiences in Latin America, South-east Asia and Africa.
