AGUASAN Workshop 24 (2008) - Announcement
Unless the sustainability levels of rural water supply services can be improved the access and funding gap towards the MDG target will only widen. Effective management of the services put in place is therefore essential. Community management is by far the most widespread approach in low-income countries and there are few cases only where alternative management models have been reported: but where they have there is strong evidence that some could be applied effectively on a much larger scale. Hence, the workshop aims to find answers to the following key questions:
- What are promising and proven alternative management models that can be fostered?
- What evidence suggests a specific management model to support the sustainability and pro-poor aspects of a given service?
- How to increase the number of managerial options commonly made available to communities?
- How can we support capacity building of actors and decision-takers towards making informed choices on appropriate management models and enacting an environment enabling change?
The announcement text outlines the aims of the workshop more in-depth. If you are interested in attending the workshop, please complete the pre-registration form / declaration of intent and return it to us as indicated.

CWG-WASH International Workshop, Ouagadougou - 1 to 5 December 2008
Preparations are being made for the next CWG-WASH international workshop. It will take place from 1st to 5th December 2008, and will be held in Ouagadougou in West Africa. We invite you to seize this opportunity to meet, exchange, and reflect with your peers on ways of improving recycling and solid waste management. Capacity development and advocacy are two vital issues on which we need to make progress. We are not calling for this meeting to simply listen to papers. We are calling it because we need to find approaches that work and to improve performance, and we hope to do this by focusing on crucial issues and working together to find ways forward.
We have been talking about capacity development and advocacy for some years. What have we learned and what have we achieved?
If you are involved in solid waste management and recycling in low- and middle-income countries, including transition countries, we invite you to read this announcement and send your contact details to the CWG Secretariat. Participation at this Workshop will be by invitation only, but our first step is to find out who is interested to be there. When you send us your contact details we will send you more information about how you can get involved.
